A note in support of Dreamers

On Tuesday September 5th, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the end of DACA, a program that protected undocumented individuals who were brought here as children.  At the same time of this announcement, President Trump’s administration stated that DACA permits would be renewed for six months while Congress worked on a permanent solution.

Over 1,000 elected officials, from both sides of the aisle, have stood in opposition to the end of DACA.  They have been joined by the US Chamber of Commerce, the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, the ACLU, and by many in the evangelical community, including World Relief, the Wesleyan Church, Korean Churches for Community Development, the National Association of Evangelicals, the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference and the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities.

As the founder of Orphans Treasure Box, I have signed the petition attached below, which urges not only action but protection of those who had been covered by DACA while Congress acts….even if that extends beyond the six month reprieve.  We are adding our voice to the many others in the evangelical community who feel compelled by our Christian faith to advocate the application of justice and compassion in dealing with this issue.

Orphans Treasure Box cares for the vulnerable.  Often, that care is seen in our employment of the homeless or in our financial support of orphans and impoverished children, but in this instance, it takes the form of voicing our strong concern for those undocumented individuals who were brought here as children.  Many of them are now parents themselves.  Ending DACA without a legislative solution and thereby opening these 800,000 individuals to the possibility of deportation is neither logical nor kind, and it will adversely affect families in our communities.  Therefore, we support a swift, reasonable and compassionate solution by Congress.
